Need to claim your funeral home’s Facebook page? Here’s how.

451252767 FBThis week, no fewer than five funeral home owners have called and asked how they could claim their company Facebook page, because they didn’t have access. The most common reason: the employee who set it up was let go and he or she was the only one who updated it.

Sometimes, however, someone will check into your funeral home or cemetery on Facebook and a Facebook Place will be created automatically. Either way, don’t despair. There are a few ways you can regain control.

First, if the separation was friendly, reach out to the employee who set up the account and ask them to make you a Manager of the page. Once you have access, remove them from the account.

But, if it was an unfriendly breakup, you have to reach out to Facebook. Here’s how:

If you are the official representative of the business, you can usually claim a Page by reporting it to Facebook.

  1. Go to the Page you want to report.
  2. Click the dropdown menu below the Page’s cover photo on the asterisk.
  3. Select Report Page and follow the prompts.

If no one is managing the Page, you can request to claim it:

  1. From the Page, click  below the Page’s cover photo on the asterisk.
  2. Select Is this your business?
  3. Add and verify information about your business, like the address and website, and click Continue.
  4. Choose to verify your connection to the business by Email, Phone number or Documentation:
    • Email: Choose this option if you have an email address associated with your Facebook account that is officially issued to you by your business. Email addresses from generic providers like Hotmail or Gmail aren’t allowed.
    • Phone number: Choose this option if you have a phone number that is publicly listed for your business. Personal cell phone numbers will not be accepted. Once you confirm your business phone number, you’ll receive a phone call with a unique PIN. Enter the PIN and click Verify.
    • Documentation: Choose this option to upload a scan or image of a document that shows your business’s name and address (ex: phone bill, business license, business tax file or articles of incorporation).
  5. Click Submit.

It can take a few weeks to have your request accepted, but once that happens, you will have full access to your company’s Facebook page.
